in Upper Canada, a public meeting held annually by citizens of a township to appoint officers and decide on affairs concerning the township (discontinued in 1849 after the passing of the Municipal Act).
1835  As the Township Meeting of the inhabitants of Wainfieet . . . they formed themselves into a publick body for the purpose of changing the name of the village of Marshville to that of some more congenial name.
1836  The people of every township ought to be aware of any sharks, who, under false pretenses, goes round with petitions, and practice that treachery on the unsuspecting farmers, which often militates against their real interests, and compels them to call a Township Meeting to disapprove of all that the cunning ones had accomplished.
1887  The township meeting for 1835 was held at Thompson's tavern on the 5th concession, at which place the township meetings continued to be held for many years.
